Independent Researcher (Consultant)
Project: Mapping UK and International Definitions of Parentage and Ethical Implications of Ectogenesis
Application deadline: 5 January 2026
Start date: Week commencing 19 January 2026. We expect this work to be completed between January and April 2026 over an equivalent of 25 working days.
Location: Remote (Access to our offices in Canary Wharf, London, optional if London-based).
The Center for Bioethics and Health Policy is seeking an independent researcher to contribute to a new project examining how definitions of parentage in the UK and selected international jurisdictions may evolve if ectogenesis or artificial womb technologies become available. The role involves desk research, legal and policy analysis, and a synthesis of relevant ethical, legal, and social implications from existing literature.
This part-time consultancy is suited to early-career or mid-career researchers with experience in reproductive law, bioethics, health policy, STS, or related fields. Applicants should be comfortable working independently and producing clear, well-structured written analysis.
Responsibilities include:

Mapping UK definitions of parentage using statutory and case law sources

Mapping parentage frameworks in selected international jurisdictions

Identifying areas of legal uncertainty that ectogenesis may expose

Reviewing and synthesising key ELSI themes from academic and policy literature

Preparing a concise written overview of findings and implications
